Firefighters’ rescue continues as heatwave looms

Image
Collected Firefighters raced to quell massive bushfires in southeastern Australia Tuesday, taking advantage of a brief drop in temperatures and some much-needed rainfall before another heatwave strikes later this week. Exhausted volunteers fixed containment lines, cleared ground vegetation and carried out controlled burns before temperatures and winds were expected to pick up again by Friday. “It really is about shoring up protection to limit the damage potential and the outbreak of the fires over the coming days,” said New South Wales Rural Fire Service commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons. He described current conditions as “much more favorable” but warned “we are expecting hotter weather to return later in the week”. Dozens of vast blazes continue to burn out of control across the east of the country and there are growing fears that two fires in New South Wales and Victoria could connect to form another uncontrollable mega blaze. Rainfall on Monday offered modest re...

Finally rain in Australia but wildfire threat not over yet

Image
Collected Australia saw its first glimpse of reprieve after months of deadly fires when rain has fallen in five ravaged parts of Australia and temperatures have dropped, but the officials still fear the blazes will “take-off” again. Torrential rains were reported in some parts of New South Wales where light rain fell down the east coast - from Sydney to Melbourne.  The rain — though welcomed by those still battling out of control fires that have so far scorched an area roughly the size of Croatia — brought challenges for fire crews attempting to complete strategic burns in preparation for higher temperatures that will return in the coming days.  But on Sunday night, the officials warned temperatures would rise by Thursday. They also said huge fires in Victoria and New South Wales could meet to create a larger “mega blaze”. “There is no room for complacency,” New South Wales state Premier Gladys Berejiklian warned on Monday morning. Iran to forego ‘limit’ as tensions with US soar

Image
Collected Iran announced a further rollback of its commitments to the troubled international nuclear accord Sunday amid anger over the US killing of a top commander which also prompted Iraq’s parliament to demand the departure of American troops. While vast crowds gathered in Iran’s second city of Mashhad as Qasem Soleimani’s remains were returned home, the Tehran government said it would forego the “limit on the number of centrifuges” it had pledged to honor in the 2015 agreement which was already in deep trouble. The announcement was yet another sign of the fallout from Friday’s killing of Soleimani in Baghdad in a drone strike ordered by President Donald Trump, which has inflamed US-Iraqi relations and among the rival camps in Washington. Iran’s 2015 nuclear accord with the United Nations Security Council’s five permanent members — Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States — plus Germany has been hanging by a thread since the US withdrew unilaterally fr...

Wildfires threaten unique critters on Australian `Galapagos`

Image
File Photo It has been described as Australia's Galapagos Islands and has long been a refuge for some of the country's most endangered creatures. But devastating wildfires over recent days have undone decades of careful conservation work on Kangaroo Island and have threatened to wipe out some of the island's unique fauna altogether. Experts working on the island say the fires have killed thousands of koalas and kangaroos, and also have raised questions about whether any members of a mouse-like marsupial species that carries its young in a pouch have survived. Similarly, it remains unclear how many from a unique flock of glossy black-cockatoos got away from the flames and whether they have a future on an island where much of their habitat has gone up in smoke. Located off the coast of South Australia state, Kangaroo Island is about 50% larger than Rhode Island and home to 4,500 people and what was a thriving ecotourism industry. But the wildfires that have b...

CES chief defends invite for Ivanka Trump

Image
File Photo The man in charge of next week's giant CES tech expo has said that Ivanka Trump has done "great work" and will help it focus attendees' minds on job-related issues for the future. A decision to offer the US president's daughter one of the show's "keynote" sessions has caused controversy. Critics have said other women with more expertise have failed to be granted lower-profile slots at the trade show. But Gary Shapiro told the BBC that he did not regret the decision. "There's a lot of focus on jobs of the future, and certainly the keynote that I'll be doing with Ivanka Trump will be focusing on... how industry is working with government on this very important issue," he said. He will interview Ms Trump - who serves as a jobs creation adviser to the president - when she appears on stage on Tuesday 7 January. He declined, however, to say if her appearance had been his organisation's idea or if th...

Ruthless Real Madrid dismantle gutsy Getafe

Image
Photo: Collected Real Madrid made an impressive start to the year as they picked apart a robust Getafe side to win 3-0 in Spanish La Liga on Saturday. Raphael Varane was the instigator of two goals at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez, first pressuring Getafe David Soria into a missed punch and an own-goal before himself heading home a cross from Toni Kroos.  Luka Modric then added a third deep into injury-time after a brilliant first-time pass by Gareth Bale had set Madrid away on the counter-attack. Victory sends Zinedine Zidane’s side top of the table briefly at least, one point above Barcelona, who play later on Saturday against Catalan rivals Espanyol.  Getafe remain seventh and very much in the race for Champions League qualification. Another excellent season under coach Jose Bordalas is proving last year’s remarkable top-four challenge was far from a fluke. But their usually stubborn defence was overly-generous as Soria’s mistake and then a free header p...

Cooler weather brings respite in Aus wildfire crisis

Image
Photo: AP Milder temperatures Sunday brought hope of a respite from wildfires that have ravaged three Australian states, claiming 24 lives and destroying almost 2,000 homes. Saturday was a day of high tension as soaring temperatures and strong winds fanned fires in New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia, forcing thousands to flee and bringing flames to the suburban fringes of Sydney. Thousands of firefighters fought to contain the blazes but many continued to burn out of control, threatening to wipe out rural townships and causing almost incalculable damage to property and wildlife. As dawn broke over a blackened landscape Sunday, a picture emerged of the disaster of unprecedented scale. The Rural Fire Service said 150 fires were active in the state, 64 of them uncontrolled. "It's not something we have experienced before," New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian said. "The weather activity we're seeing, the extent and spread of th...

‘Hollywood needs to step up’: Sexual harassment after Weinstein

Image
Harvey Weinstein accused sexual assault charges by many Hollywood celebrities The #MeToo movement sparked by sexual assault charges against movie mogul Harvey Weinstein brought down many Hollywood celebrities, but insiders believe the entertainment industry has a long way to go to change its culture and handling of harassment. While the conversation surrounding predators in positions of power in Tinseltown has moved into the open, the underlying behavior often continues — as do attempts to cover up incidents by people surrounding the accused. Only two years ago, before #MeToo erupted, it was “kind of unthinkable …to even ask Gwyneth Paltrow or Rosanna Arquette, ‘Did you get assaulted by Harvey Weinstein?'” said the Hollywood Reporter’s Kim Masters. But even now, “I hear stories all the time that we can’t even get to the point of publishing,” said Masters, who has written extensively on the scandals. Recent films such as ‘Bombshell’ and the Apple TV+ series ‘The...

Iran has vowed ‘severe revenge’ on those responsible for the death of Soleimani, head of the Quds Force. Regarding this, he said, we didn’t take action to start a war.
